Sign language
How can music be visualised, embodied and experienced in sign language?
In September 2025, a sign language poet, a sign language interpreter, a singer, a pianist, a dancer and a video artist created a concert in German sign language with interpretation into Swiss German sign language.
Songs by Robert Schumann were poetically translated into sign language. However, the focus was primarily on the texts by author Stephanie Mündel-Möhr (Deaf*), which she recited as visual sign language poetry. In a second step, these poems were expanded and accompanied.
The concept is also suitable for larger groups, choirs, dance companies and sign language choirs.
Premiere of ‘Zwei Welten’ (Two Worlds): September 2025, Raum 236 Zurich
* The adjective ‘Deaf’ is capitalised. It is a self-designation used by people who feel connected to sign languages, deaf communities and deaf cultures.
